The dealer is responsible for making every effort to obtain Genuine GM Service Replacement Parts for the performance of warranty repairs. In the event such parts are not available through GMSPO, ACDelco distributors, or other GM dealers, the dealer is to obtain comparable non-GM parts. The dealer is to clearly indicate on the repair order the circumstances surrounding the use of non-GM parts in a warranty repair. The dealer is to disclose the use of any non-GM parts to the customer and explain any applicable warranty coverage. (GM Service Policies & Procedures Manual - Article 1.2.4)
New or remanufactured parts and accessories installed during the warranty period in conjunction with a warranty repair are covered for the remainder of the new vehicle or emissions warranty, or for the 12 months/12,000 mile dealer parts and accessories warranty, whichever is more favorable to the customer.
When available, dealers should use remanufactured components in warranty repairs.
When using non-GM parts, the following policies should be followed:
- The manufacturer or distributor of a non-GM part is solely responsible for any parts warranty. GM warranty does not cover non-GM parts.
- Dealer is to provide the owner with a copy of the warranty, if in writing, associated with the sale of non-GM parts if applicable.
- Reimbursement for a non-GM part will be made at the dealer’s actual cost not to exceed the dealer price of the comparable GM part. The warranty parts handling allowance does not apply to non-GM parts that are used in warranty repairs. If the non-GM part was used at GM’s direction the handling allowance will apply.
- GM must pre-approve instances of potential reimbursements for non-GM part costs that exceed the cost of a comparable GM component.
- GM may charge back the cost plus any handling allowance of non-GM parts used when GM is able to verify the use of non-GM parts when GM parts are available.
The contractual provisions as found within the Dealers’
Sales and Service Agreement, Article 8.1, state: “the
dealer agrees to use only genuine GM or General Motors approved
parts and accessories in performing warranty repairs, special
policy repairs, and any other repairs paid for by General Motors
in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Service
Policies and Procedures Manual.”
