ARE YOU HIRING RIGHT?

Article taken from January 2006 GM Profit & Protection warranty newsletter

We've all heard this before, but it's worthy of hearing again; having good recruitment and hiring practices will lead to longevity with employees.

Statistics show that it is very costly to go through the process to fill a vacant position. It is estimated that the recruitment/hiring process along with training can cost a company anywhere from $10,000 to $60,000 a person, depending on the type of position that needs to be filled.
If you find yourself constantly hiring new people, you may want to consider spending some time, money, and energy into revising your hiring practices.

At J&L, we advertise in local newspapers and on the portion of the State of Michigan website set up for recruitment. We also rely on referrals from current employees.

The key is, we never take anyone or anything for granted. We have learned that if we hire just to fill a vacancy, no matter how urgent the matter is we often end up disappointed because we hurried our efforts and took the first person that came along. In most cases, people that have not been put through our entire hiring process end up not working out. We both lose.

We request resumes and review them. We highlight qualities and/or job experiences that apply to the position. We interview potential candidates by phone with questions that will help us weed out the best candidates. If they meet our criteria, they are asked to come in for two employment tests. One test indicates their ability to learn, the other lets us know what type of personality traits they have. If these fit our standards, then, and only then, do we set up a formal interview.

Most applicants tell us they have never been through such a thorough screening process and are impressed with the time taken. Our motto is, as much as we want them qualified to do the job, we want the prospective employee to know about our company, like what they see, and really want to work here. The shoe must fit both sides.

We have learned that even though it takes time, training, and effort, it is well worth the cost to "hire right." We want to be a "pro" in every way to serve our customers better.
